How are employees getting along?

  • 1 in 5 suffer from mood disorders in their lifetime
  • Less than ½ seek treatment
  • Mood Disorder = Depression (growing faster than CAD), Anxiety (most common), Bipolar disorder
  • Early intervention = Success
  • World Health Organization - by 2020 depression will be 2nd leading cause of disability and mortality
  • Mental health claims = 4-12% of payroll
  • Employees with mental health problems 2/3 times more likely to be absent
  • Employees with disorders are unproductive
  • Costs of presenteeism are often higher than absenteeism

What are Employers doing?

  • More than half view mental health claims as top concern; only 31% have plans in place
  • Only 35% have return to work processes specific to mental health
  • Less than 33% have taken action
  • Only 27% have a mental health assessment tool
  • Less than 10% have trained managers to identify and address problems
  • Only 5% have plans to address the stigma - education
